The Roots (5)

As I sit back and think about what just happened I can only think that everyone is right, Zach, Ari, even Quick is right.

I wanted that "nigga" to jump out of me so bad in the restaurant. One, because I was so angry and also because it will probably feel good to just let this professional guard down but I can't. I can't go back to that. My "nigga" days that is.

Before I decided I wanted to be a lawyer, I was a knucklehead. Nothing too bad, don't get me wrong but I was far from an angel.

Before my high school days, I was in public school. I've always been very smart, so school work was pretty easy. My grades were way above average. I was an angry kid, though back then, I didn't know what I was angry about and that's a problem

I'm the youngest of three kids by my parents. One older sister and one older brother. My sister is seven years older than I am. She's really smart too but wound up getting pregnant at sixteen, so she probably never reached her full potential; but she's doing pretty good now so I guess it's cool. My brother, he's six years older, quick turnaround for my folks but life was different when they were born, so they could do things like that.

Before I was born, my family lived in the suburbs. My mother was a stay-at-home mom ,while my father had worked his way up to be a Construction Manager  making great money. The issue was that my dad didn't know how to change once he came into all that money. Both of my parents only graduated from high school and Pop just started making dumb decisions in his later years.

My mom says Jamal, my dad, was no stranger when it came to cocaine. She knew he used but not much because it was expensive and he wasn't bad with money. However, when he became a manager, he did at least a gram of coke per day, that's one hundred dollars every day for one gram. Sometimes he would do more.

Moms had enough by the time my older brother was three. Jamal did some coke while he and my brother, Eric, were home alone. By the time my mom and my sister Nia got back, my dad was laid out on the floor while Eric was in a playpen crying, smelling of feces. She called the ambulance but didn't even stay to see them come, she took them both and left back to the city. With some money she had taken out of the bank from their bank account, she got a tiny apartment in Washington Park on the south side.

With moms only getting as far as an high school diploma, the best she could do was bartending here and there and bus driving. Things were really rough around 1985, my mother was in between jobs more and my brother and sis were getting older and just needed more. Jamal tried to give money but it was never accepted, he couldn't talk to his children or see them. Eric doesn't even remember him, and Nia, just vaguely.

Now she needed help so she went to him. The old house is different, she would say. It looked old and dusty, kind of like the old house you would see on a horror movie. Still he got her in there with plenty of begging and pleading. He told her he was changing and he wanted the family back, that he was healthy again. She said he took off his shirt and said "Baby look at all the weight I gained, I'm back" grinning and slapping his chest a few times.

"No Jamal."

"Baby I promise. I miss you, I miss the kids, please come back." On his hands and knees with his head to my mothers feet and tears dropping of his cheeks.

"Ok." She said. She says those were the words she had been waiting to hear for four years so it didn't take much for her to budge. "Look I have to go get the kids from mommas and take them home an..."

"No, baby don't go yet." He interrupted her began to kiss her hands, still on his knees, and worked his way up. Her stomach, then standing to kiss her breast, necks, and finally her lips.

She broke. Here she is hearing the words she's been waiting to hear for years and being touched in ways she hasn't been touched in years.

Of course they worked their way into the bedroom, stumbling over the mess in the floor on the way up. She stops her story there. They have sex and that is the night I was conceived.

My mother leaves on cloud nine, thinking everything will be fine. After she picks up my brother and sister, she arrives home with the police there. He OD'd.

After the initial shock, moms realized he was never off and that he was just lying. "It was bound to happen with the lifestyle he chose." She would always say. Actually she had some hope, they could go back to the house. That was until she received a letter about all the missed payments. The house was gone. The cars were gone. Savings were gone. The best part, she was now pregnant with me.

No Pop, no money, two siblings that experienced a father, I was angry. I would take that anger out on anyone, my teachers, my classmates, my family, everyone. My mother used to tell me "Ain't nobody gon hire no angry nigga. You wanna live like this forever?"

Confession (4)

I wake up relieved that Ari called me to bed when she did. If that conversation kept going, there's no telling what may have been said. I'm not even supposed to be drinking anymore, if Ari knew I was downstairs drinking last night she would kill me. I imagine it would be along the lines of how I'm going to kill Zach for that stunt he pulled last night. I hate being angry on a Friday.

After getting dressed, I save my shoes for last so that I can kneel down beside the bed and put my ring away like I always do. I slip the ring into a box and place that box in a shoe box and put my shoes on. I then walk over to Ari and kiss her lips and her belly before leaving.

Following my arrival at work I try to stay out of contact with people, I'm in a hurry and a bad mood. Viv is the first person I see.

"Good morning Mr. Ely." She said with a welcoming smile.

"Viv." I coldly reply as I hurry to my office with my head down.

I see Zach on my way. "Hey buddy, come to talk to me." I say to him trying not to yell.

"Yeah dude I'll be there in a sec" he replied without even looking my way.

"No man, now!" I say as if I were his parent and he was acting up in public.

"Dude what's up?" He looks puzzled.

"Shut the door. Why the hell did you give Viv my number? You want me to cheat on Ari don't you? I'm not you dog! I'm not like that anymore. It's nothing there so stop trying to push it" I'm speaking forcefully in a whisper at this point.

"Whoa man. She asked for you number for something job related, didn't want my help because she says you think I'm an idiot. I agreed that I'm an idiot so I told her if she had any questions then she should ask you."

"But you said it yourself that she wants me."

"And you said it yourself that you don't want her so I didn't think it was a problem."

"I mean yeah it's not but a little heads up would be nice." I say feeling kind of dumb and clearly seeming guilty. "Look dog it ain't even a big deal. I have to go anyway and meet up with Quick."

"Yeah sure." He says with the same puzzled face he came in with.

I hurry out the door and again, Viv.

"Lunch today?" She asks.

"Can't." I reply while still looking away and walking fast.

"Hey Zach, Lance is acting strange today." Viv says.

"I know, what the hell did you tell the guy last night?" Zach replies jokingly

"Nothing, I asked him a question about work and told him I would like it if we spent more time together."

"Well I don't know, maybe he's gay." Zach says before leaving.

Walking to the restaurant I can't help but feel a little weird. Why did I go off like that? I did tell Zach there was nothing there but I went crazy. Ok so I'm attracted to her, I'm not a blind man that's not a crime.

I walk into the restaurant to the private table arranged for the meeting and not to my surprise Quick isn't there yet but it's fine because it's still early. So I order two waters as I always do when meeting with a client as I patiently wait.

About five minutes after the waitress set the water on the table, Quick walks in. I stand up to greet him like any other client.

"Nigga sit yo ass down I ain't cha women!" He said laughing as he sat down.

I let out a sigh of annoyance and sit down, "Good morning Mr. Ellis, we should talk about..."

"Come on dog stop calling me Mr. Ellis, you know my name, it's Quick."

"My apologies Quick."

"Man drop the preppy boy shit, we ain't at the office."

"You're not seeing an act of any kind."

"Ok, let's just talk business right now but I know that nigga gon jump right outta you one of these days." He said smirking as he had a drink of water.

"Well until then, you'll get this guy. Things are looking good for you. The witness they have isn't credible at all, they probably won't even let him take the stand. The evidence is minimal at best..."

"You think I did it don't you?"

"That's not important to me."

"I did." He said studying my reaction.

My heart drops to my stomach. I always thought that he did do it but hearing him actually say it just took me to a different place. I'm angry, I'm afraid, I don't know what to say so I just sit there.

"I knew I could tell you dog. I needed to get that off my chest but you gotta understand little dude was in a war zone.
It was an accident man."

"Well Mr. Ellis, um, we will still do just fine, like I said there isn't evidence on you." I say nervously. "I do need to go, so if that is all, I will be on my way." He must see me sweating.

"Yeah do that." He says looking through my soul.

Usually when I get home on Fridays I like to just sit back and relax but tonight I can't. He shot that kid in the middle of the streets and left.

"Baby are you alright? You've been sitting here since we ate two hours ago." Ari came to me downstairs in our living room.

I must look like a man who's seen a ghost. "He did it." I say softly looking right through Ari who was standing directly in front of me.

"What Lance I couldn't hear you."

"He did it, Ellis, he shot the kid."

"Yeah you already told me you think that."

"No. I know. He told me, today."

"THAT PIECE IF SH...oh I hope he dies in prison." She becomes excited before catching herself.

"He won't." I say with the same blank stare.

"What?! You just have to tell them right? You have to, you're going to tell them aren't you?"

"I can't do that." I say with a tear falling down my face.

"What do you mean? You're just not going to tell that boys parents?"

"Then I'll tell them!"

"You don't get it. There's attorney/client privilege, he can tell me anything and I can't share it or I can be disbarred."

"But Lan..."

"ARIA I KNOW WHAT I'M DOING!" I scream as I get irritated.

She just looks at me as if she were looking at a stranger then turns and walks toward the stairs. As she begins to walk up the stairs she looks back and says, "What if that kid were your son?"

My head goes down.

Past in the Past (3)

As I drive home, I just can't forgive myself for just acting as if Aria didn't exist. Just forget about it, I have to continually tell myself as I listen to some J.Cole.

"This is Martin Luther King in the club, gettin dubs, with a bad chick in ear sayin that she down for whatever, in the back of his mind is Coretta" I sing the words to "She Knows" aloud. I had to turn that off. Temptation is already brewing up inside of me. But that's normal, I just have to not act on it. God she's bad though!

When I get home it's pretty late, I really took my time on the way. The sun is down already  and the temperature has dropped. I throw on my black overcoat, striped grey flat cap and leather gloves before I head in the house.

I walk through the door and I see Ari sitting in the living room.

"Hey Babe, whatchu doing over there"

"Just over here going through some old pictures, reminiscing about our college days when we first met" she said as she tilted her head and smiled at me as she looked up.

I didn't say anything, only smiled back admiring her beauty.

"You haven't changed one bit since college" she says as she goes back to flip through some pictures.

Actually she's wrong. I've changed so much, that's how I was able to walk away from Viv earlier today. When Ari and I first started dating I don't know how many other women I was seeing. The school was so big, it was too easy. The other niggas on campus wereso rude that they made it so easy for me; by just being a gentleman you could get a woman hooked. Opening doors, speaking politely, holding books, helping women to places in the rain under your umbrella, I can go on and on. Yeah it's who I am but I knew what I was doing as well. Ari knows about some things but not all, some things you have to take to the grave.

"Anything exciting happen at work today?" she asks as she usually does.

"Nope, you know how it is" is what I normally reply. My left hand always stays in my pocket until I go upstairs to put my ring back on, I wonder if she ever notices. I take my ring off every morning when I kneel down beside the bed to get some shoes I pull out the night before and put them in a shoe box.

We share a kiss before I head upstairs to change. I walk over a few boxes leftover from the move in to get up the stairs. I stop to look at my sons room, the first room to the right as soon as you make it all the way up. I'm still amazed that I'm having a son soon because after how I was in college I should've had a girl.

After I change, I sit back on the bed to watch tv but the Ari comes in saying she's sleepy so I kiss her again and go back downstairs to stay up a bit longer. I stop in the kitchen to get a small cup of ice, on the way home I stopped at the store for a small bottle of Honey Whiskey. When things get hectic, I like to sit back have some drinks and watch "First 48". Twenty seven minutes into the show and halfway through my small bottle of whiskey, I get a text.

"Hey Mr. Ely" I read from an unknown number. Only a couple people call me by last name and that's Ari and my momma, so I have no clue who this can be. Maybe a potential client.

"Hello but I'm sorry I don't know who this is" I have to pay special attention, the words all look a little blurry at this point.

"Oh sorry lol it's Viv, from work, Zach gave me your number I hope it's alright."

I don't know if I mentioned but Zach is an asshole. I brush it off though. "Yeah of course that's cool, what's up?"

"You said earlier that you think your clients are sometimes guilty, why?"

"Sometimes they are just overly cocky and not worried about anything, they kind of just brush off everything like it doesn't even matter what happened."

"I know what you mean, I'm think about getting out."

"What you don't want to be a lawyer anymore?!" I'm surprised, I understand but I'm still surprised.

"You know what don't even worry about it, that's not important at the moment."

"So what else is?"

"Well I'm enjoying my time with you even though brief and I wanted to know if you were interested in spending more time together?" The words are so blurry.

"I'm nto ti sure if I can right nei" by the time I reply the bottle is gone.

"Oh I didn't mean right now Mr. Ely I mean like dating you know lol. Just think about it because judging by that last message you must be half sleep so I'll just talk to you tomorrow at work."

At this point I don't even bother to respond and just take my last sip of whiskey and sit back. I start thinking about my college days.

If I met Viv in college, I would've hit her by now. Normally I wouldn't have invited girls to my dorm room unless they were an eight or better and she's a nine. White women back at school loved some black men too. I put my hands behind my head to focus more on this fantasy and let out a slight smile...

"Lance bring your ass to bed before I get mad." Ari yells startling me from upstairs and snapping me out of those thoughts. I stumble my way upstairs, crawl into bed and throw my arms around her. No need for my mind to wander now.

Innocent Friendship (2)

Now, I would never cheat on my wife but from the outside looking in, I can see why somebody would think there is a hook up evident. Ok, I don't wear my wedding ring so people think I'm single but I have my reasons. As far as Viv goes, she is one of the few single women on our floor and probably is the only attractive one here. She's tall like a model, about 5'10 and stacked! I mean the girl is thick - she's  not fat at all. I mean, imagine Serena Williams almost. Beautiful blue eyes, long blonde hair, and she wears very little make up and can still catches your eye. Oh and she's white.

"Dude Viv is basically throwing it at you" Zach says in a light though excited voice as he surprises me as I sit in my office.

"Married man dog" I calmly reply.

"Yes! Married men we are, we deserve a little fun!"

"Swingers. That's it, you two are swingers. It's no way that you can't be, you literally cheat every week"

"Well it's more like an open relationship. You know, I do as I please and she better not cheat or she has to go. Simple"

"She gon' kill you one day or at least leave you if she's smart"

"Well she ain't smart and she loves the money, so I'm going to go make some more before I go on this lunch date with Heather." He said in a coniving manner. "Oh, and the only reason Vivian wants you  instead of me is because you're black and people say we have it easy"

You're an idiot" I say bursting in laughter. The truth of the matter is, Zach has always just been a plain looking white boy so he doesn't really stand out, but he has money. His father is filthy rich from investing money he won in the lottery a long time ago. Zach never really had to work for anything and still doesn't, but he's cool with me.

After going through some papers of my latest case, I get a phone call from my client, Jarvis Ellis, they call him Quick on the streets.

"Mr Ellis, how are you today sir, how can I help you?" I say in my best professional voice.

"You know man just making sure I'm staying outta jail" he said sounding unsure of my ability.

"You're going to get my best effort and I have a good track record so I'm going to need you to just trust me"

"Man I wouldn't shoot no lil nigga. I swear, I got a lil nigga myself man. I wasn't even in that car" he begins to protest.

"Mr. Ellis, at this point, all of that doesn't matter. The evidence against you at the moment is minimal at best. We have a really good chance at beating this thing"

He laughs. "Man you don't talk like no nigga. I just wanted to call to see where you at with all this, you know I got my boys out here on the block a little longer now tryna pay you. A lot of people would be upset if I go to prison after all this work." The tone changed to almost threatening.

"Everything will be fine Mr. Ellis. I'll be in contact" I hurry to get off the phone.

As I walk to the elevator to leave for lunch, Viv walks up right behind me.

"So what are you in the mood for Mr. Ely" she said excitedly as she spoke over my shoulders on her tiptoes.

"Guess we'll just wing it" I say without turning around as we walk onto the elevator.

"Lance, I am so impressed with the work you've been doing here. So young yet you're accomplishing so much. You're an impressive young man to say the least"

"Thanks Viv that means a lot coming from you." Despite being white, Viv wasn't spoon fed on her way to being a lawyer like Zach and the fact that she is a woman didn't make the road any easier. She's a few years older than me and has been her a bit longer, so I respect her a lot.

"Well I like to try to stay on top" she said provocatively.

I look to respond but I was kind of stuck, plus we've reached the ground floor so I just begin to walk.

"I know a place right across the street we can sit and eat" I tell her.

"That's fine with me." She quickly responds.

As we wait at the crosswalk, I can pretty much feel her eyes burning a hole through my soul and, as soon as I look at her to stir up some pointless conversation, she strikes.

"Lance are you seeing anyone?"

Damn, I think to myself. I feel like I can tell her but that's my rule, don't tell anyone about my family unless my back is up against the wall. "You know I stay so busy." I say puzzled.

"Well I know I love a man that can stay busy" she says as the light turns red and we are able to walk.

"How's your case coming along?" She's asks bringing me to a more comfortable conversation.

"It's cool, it's just that..." I pause.

"What"

"He did it. I know he did it. He shot that kid. They just don't have enough evidence. Like what if that was my son?"

"Good thing you're so consumed in work and you don't have a family yet right?"

At first I'm confused and it probably shows but I gather myself as I open the door for her at the restaurant. "Yeah, right!" I say, looking down at my left hand.

For The Love of Aria (1)

A new home, my home, our home. That was all I could think to myself as my wife and I stood there looking at our new home. We were finally about to purchase one, this one! I'm kind of feeling myself now. Twenty nine years old, lawyer and a damn good one at that, beautiful wife on my arm and a son on the way.

"I want it, baby I really want it", my wife, Aria, announced to me.

"You know I got you boo", I calmly replied.

"Seriously?! We're finally moving out the city?"

"You know I wasn't raising my son in the city, especailly right now."

"Yes I know, I know. I just did't think we'd move so soon!"

See we live in Chicago and, if you haven't heard, we're having bit of a problem with violence. That's why I'm still here. Ultimately I want to become a judge. Actually, the more work I do as a defense attorney the more I want that. I kind of feel like I owe it to people to put criminals behind bars; I mean, I'm keeping so many criminals out of jail it's the least I can do.

Aria is in love with our new home and she should be, but, I'm just not feeling too happy right now - all I can do is think of my latest case.

"Baby I can't wait 'til we leave here tomorrow" Aria came and sat right on my lap in our aparment living room and I barely noticed.

"Uh, hello! Am I talking to myself?"

"What?" I reply snapping out of no mans land.

"I said I can't wait to leave here tomorrow  but now since you can't acknowledge my presence with this thing on your lap, I don't want to talk about it anymore!" as she smirked and rolled her eyes. "What's wrong?"

That quick she took my mind off of the case. I try not to talk about cases with her but she can pretty much get whatever she wants out of me, hence the house. I mean, you have to see her to understand. Beautiful brown eyes, smooth brown skin, short dark hair right to the shoulder, full gorgeous lips, 5'2, nice butt, you know, not too big not too small and a perfect C-cup. Lord she's fine!
"Woman now you know when you sit on my lap it sends me into limbo"

"Lance I know you don't want to talk about the case and tonight I do not care. I want you to get up and follow me to the bedroom" she said seductively.

"Well what's in the bedroom." I just like to try to get her to say it, she's so shy.

"Let's just call it my part of the down payment" she licked her lips and turned away and went off into the bedroom.

"SAY LESS!" I say jumping up running to the bedroom, I even bang my toe on the coffee table and don't feel a thing.

"Ely wake up, you're going to be late!" Aria never calls me by my first name; only a cute pet name or Ely, my last name.

"Ok woman, I'm coming." I replied aggravated. I hate mornings.

"Just hurry up and shower so we can get this truck to the house. Bobbi is coming over to help and she is bringing her brother for a little security"

"Baby no, why'd you do that to us? We were about to start a new life, a new beginning and you go and potentially throw it all away?"

"WHAT!?" she looked puzzled.

"You told Bobbi where we are going. This was my last opportunity it shake her, we'll never lose her annoying ass now". Man I hate Bobbi and of course she is Aria's best friend. Bobbi can't hold water. She's faster than CNN, NBC, FOX, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter! She's always snooping too and it's so obvious but I just play the fool. She keeps Aria nice and busy while I'm gone so it sort of works out.

"Shut up, you know you love her".

"Who the hell ever said that?"

"It doesn't ever matter just get ready so we can go."

"Well it's about time you join us, we've been here waiting for y'all for about thirty minutes now" Bobbi just knows how to work nerves. "What were y'all....oh I know, late night ayyyyy, girl you probably kept him up all night doing that thing I told you huh?"

"Bobbi, oh my god, shut up!" Aria says giggling shyly.

"Yes Bobbi, please, for all our sakes, shut up" clearly agitated.

"Oh Lance shut up, those moves I tell her to do keep you coming back I see" she exclaimed.

"See now I know you didn't teach her anything cuz I'm still here and lord knows if you taught her something I would have been gone. We all know you can't keep a man. In the eight years that I have known you, I cannot recall a time where one guy stayed over two weeks"

"You ain't right for that one babe." Aria said filled with laughter.

"Yeah man you can't do my sister like that." Bobbi's younger brother Luke gets out the car to come to the aid of his sister. "But damn Bobbi he's right"

We all laugh. I don't know much about Luke other than he's pretty young, 17, and him and Bobbi have different fathers and Luke stayed primarily in North Carolina with his pops until he got into some trouble and came to stay up here with Bobbi. Now. I'm not sure what's worse, him coming to the Chi to stay out of trouble or his pop letting him stay with Bobbi. Bobbi says he used to be a knuckle head but has calmed down a lot. Usually, I wouldn't leave a guy like that around Ari but he's sort of like family, unfortunately, since Bobbi is. Plus, there are some moving guys coming to move this stuff in for us, so it's cool.

"I would love to stay here with y'all but since Bobbi came imma go ahead and head to work." I say as I turn to kiss my wonderful wife and head to my car. Give her a lil slap on the butt for good measure, lick my lips, and walk away.

"Mmmm" she says softly as she looks back and raises her eyebrows. She ain't gotta say much I know what it means.

I work at a firm called Schultz and McCormick, pretty big out here. We handle a lot of the biggest cases here in the city. Personally, a lot of my clients are shakey guys and should probably be locked up. I say this because I don't want this to be taken the wrong way. My wedding ring stays at home. Not once have I wore my ring into the office. Actually, there is only one person there who knows that I'm married.

"How's the wife" my friend Zach whispers to me in the elevator so no one else can hear.

I just ignore him.

"Oh wait, you don't have on a wedding ring, you can't be married" he whispers with a baffled looked on his face as he looks away. If you hadn't noticed, Zach is an asshole. You gotta love him though. I met him in my first class back in college and we've been cool ever since. I knew him before I knew Aria, that's the sole reason why he knows that I'm married but he doesn't say anything.

As we get off the elevator, a familiar coworker approaches us, Vivian.

"Morning fellas". Vivian says with a huge smile.

"Morning Viv" I reply politely.

"Morning Viv!" Zach repeats sarcastically. "So you know, Viv, I'm free tonight. What do you say you and I, I don't know, grab a bite to eat?"

"As intriguing as that sounds I must decline. I do not date married men Zach" she replied proudly.

"Well hey have it your way, go to lunch with this guy instead" he says with a smirk. He turns to walk away and under his breath says "She loves dating married men and she don't even know it, didn't Ricky Ross say something like that?"

I have to laugh. "Well I guess we're on for lunch again, as usual". This really is not what it seems. I love good conversation and Viv is very smart. Outside of law, Zach is an idiot. Plus, during his lunch break, he normally grabs a hotel room with a mistress.

"Well another lucky day for me then, Mr. Ely" she said flirtatiously.
